1991: Turkey

Travelling throughout Turkey, starting in Izmir. I cycle first to Ephesus and then passing Pamukkale to Antalya. A short ride along the coast brings me to Aspendos and Side from where I climb to the Anatolian plateau. Cappadocia is an amazing landscape, the Nemrut dağ ıs unforgettable. Further east the road climbs slowly into Kurdistan. At Lake Van, nearly 2000 m above sea level, I visit the famous Akthamar church and some old Kurdish castles. On my way to Trabzon on the Black Sea I get sick, but in Trabzon I find new energy to visit the Sumela monastery in the mountains.
